About this deal

Anything from brooches and buckles, Byzantine buckets to beaver teeth associated with a “ cunning woman” whose remains had been uncovered ( ( early 14c. I did find the final chapter, which was more about people and their movement, rather than the artefacts they left behind, rather slow going and more academic. It was full of small, clear plastic bags, carefully laid out with sheets of tissue paper between them. In particular, they can indicate family connections and where someone was brought up, which can often be a very long way indeed from where they were buried.

And so we get unending blather that really feels like she got drunk and just rambled on to her bartender about her thoughts and feelings regarding burials in Roman and early Medieval Britain.I wish I had quit it after the first 2 chapters but with so many positive reviews I had to continue but I wish I hadn’t bothered.

Whether officially in or out of the Empire, in or out of the wider European economic union, life in Britain – would go on. I was so excited to read this given how much I enjoyed Ancestors that I bought the hard copy immediately - lesson learned - because I was very disappointed. Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his (somewhat fanciful and not terribly reliable) History of the Kings of Britain, describes how Arthur chooses the City of Legions ‘upon the River Usk, near the Severn Sea’ as the venue for his coronation.Just two years later, when Titus died of a fever, Vespasian’s younger son, Domitian, succeeded him, and would reign for fifteen years. It was perfect timing for Claudius – he could respond to this request for assistance and make everything a lot simpler by bringing Britain under Imperial rule. But she is frequently repetitive; she is painfully conscious of the sensitivity of these issues, but does also spend a lot of time apologising for each point.
