About this deal

Obviously we knew people were going to totally sensationalize it. They're beautiful girls, the scene is hot—I'm not afraid to say that. There is a sexual energy between the girls which is kind of authentic, because I know when I was a teen-aged girl, the friendships that I had with other girls were almost romantic, they were so intense. I wanted to sleep at my friend's house every night, I wanted to wear her clothes, we would talk on the phone until our ears ached. I wanted to capture that heightened feeling you get as an adolescent that you don't really feel as a grownup. (laughs) You like [your] friends when you're a grownup, but you don't need to sleep in the same bed with them and talk to them on the phone until 5 a.m. every night. [17]

The film has seen a resurgence in recent years, but it's the popularity it garnered inside the LGBTQ+ community that propelled its cult status. People who have found this film more than 10 years after its release have discovered a new story in it, freed from the rhetoric of its marketing campaign and the reading that critics gave it. A whole new generation of queer women can now see themselves in the characters of Needy and Jennifer in a way that few other films allowed in 2009 – or still allow even today.Rothkopf, Joshua (September 18, 2009). "Jennifer's Body". Time Out New York. Archived from the original on September 23, 2009 . Retrieved September 19, 2009. This was supposed to be a movie for men. So where were the men? Where was the sexy posing? Where was the smut and the fun? Sperling, Nicole (September 21, 2009). "Box Office: 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' soars; 'Jennifer's Body' sinks". The reclamation of Jennifer’s Body that we’re witnessing now begins by tossing out any attempts to read the movie as a fantasy for men. Instead, Jennifer’s Body apologists read it as a fantasy for women — and when you look at the movie that way, everything starts to change. Jennifer’s Body reads very differently post-#MeToo Machado, Carmen Maria (2022). "Both Ways". In Vallese, Joe (ed.). It Came From the Closet. New York City: The Feminist Press. pp.21–28. So when Jennifer’s Body came out, there was a ready-made narrative waiting for it: The script was trying too hard; it was too sexualized, or maybe not sexy enough; it was a trashy, empty B-movie with delusions of grandeur.a b Rodriguez, Rene (September 18, 2009). And of course, the results were mixed. Upon initial release of the film, some hated the overt sexiness Megan Fox brought to the film. How could the girl from Transformers portray a feminist icon? Perhaps, Fox grew tired of the reliance of her body in her past work with, so she utilized Kusama’s film as a way to subvert the reliance of the male gaze in mainstream cinema. She uses both her and Jennifer’s body to counteract the stigma from Transformers.Putting that botched marketing campaign to one side, it's clear what Cody and Kusama were aiming to do with Jennifer's Body. The film makes observations about the toxicity of female friendship from an informed point of view, something they felt they could do because they were a female creative team. The clearest expression of the 2009 critical consensus on Jennifer’s Body came from Ebert, who described it as “ Twilight for boys” — in other words, a silly adolescent sex fantasy designed explicitly for straight guys, with Megan Fox taking Robert Pattinson’s place as the designated crush object. Yet, I was still unsure about the feminist elements in the film. Had I just been missing them the entire time? So, I decided to do what any dedicated film fan does: research. a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s Roberts, Sheila (2009). "Megan Fox, Diablo Cody Interview, Jennifers Body". MoviesOnline. The novel features less of Jennifer than the film, but does capture her "going in for the kill" several times. It focuses heavily on following her soon-to-be victims and provides information on their personalities not elaborated on in the film so that readers can better conclude whether the boys deserved to be murdered. The novel consists of four chapters, with a prologue and an epilogue, with art provided for each by different artists. Each one follows a different boy and what is happening in his life just before Jennifer kills him. [72]Neumaier, Joe (September 18, 2009). The next morning at school, Jennifer appears fine and dismisses Needy's concerns, appearing apathetic to the fire tragedy. She seduces the school's football captain and disembowels him. Meanwhile, Low Shoulder gains popularity due to their falsely rumored heroism during the fire, and offer to make a charity appearance at the school's spring formal. I hope between some of their materials [the studio’s] and some of the materials that we generated a little bit more, the audience out there can see that it’s a little bit more complicated than a straight comedy, a straight horror film, a straight high school movie, and see it for what it is which is a fresh take on all of those things,” said Kusama. “It’s hard.” One of the movie’s most disturbing moments comes when the band has Jennifer tied up and begging for mercy. They start to laugh. They launch into a group chorus of “ 867-5309/Jenny,” with the lead singer singing into his sacrificial knife like it’s a microphone. Then they start stabbing her to death.
