About this deal

Personally, I’m not that keen on ground feeding cages. They certainly keep larger birds out, but the bars are so tightly spaced that even some of the smaller customers think twice before venturing in. The best thing this wooden table along with my narrow metal cage stops the pigeons from getting the bird food. You can try pairing our Adjustable ground feeding sanctuary with a ground feeder such as the RSPB ground feeding table. You may have to experiment with the food you place inside, and/or the size of the gaps in the sanctuary. Structure of this simple ground feeder is a metal square bar tied in with the rim of the metal mesh lining. Before we look at how best to cater to the ground feeders, let’s look at why some birds prefer to feed in this way and which birds fall into this group. Why Do Some Birds Feed on The Ground?

Offering food to ground-feeding birds on a bird table keeps mess off your lawn and provides some protection from rodents and predators. But if keeping predators and larger birds at bay is an issue, then a cage ground feeder could be an option. A surprising number of our most popular garden birds prefer to feed on the ground. The Thrush Family Like pigeons, they are ground feeders and not built to eat clinging to tree trunks or hanging bird feeders. Now we’re not saying that pigeons won’t eat your fat balls. But they are certainly not a favourite food. Given the choice between suet products and few handfuls of grain, or really cheap bird food, the pigeons will choose the grains/bird food. The key is to choose a model where the feeding platform is not too high off the ground. Many of our smaller ground-feeding birds will be happy on a feeding platform that’s just 4 or 5 foot above ground level. So our Bath Universal Bird Table, for example, is a great option. Not so tall as to be daunting for the smaller ground feeders and open-sided to allow access for bigger birds. If you want something a a little more modern or perhaps a feeding tray that will compliment the patio, then there's options for you there to.

While hanging feeders are now the most popular bird feeding method in UK gardens, we have an array of alternative options available, some of which may even attract a greater variety of garden birds! One such product is the ground feeder, which comes in a range of designs and specifications to suit a broader selection of feeding aims. Keeping birds healthy and safe is so important. We wanted to create a high-quality cage that can provide both nutrition and safety, which is why we used powder-coated steel so you can rely on this sturdy cage.Protect smaller birds from predators in this safe haven, designed to cover food on the ground for birds. When we think of attracting birds to the garden, our first thought is probably to hang up a feeder. Many ground-feeding birds just aren’t equipped to feed, hanging at an acrobatic angle from branches or tree trunks. So this means that they will also find it difficult to eat from your hanging feeders. Which Birds Are Ground Feeders? And also like pigeons, they are quite big birds. They have a wingspan of over a foot and can weigh up to 4 ounces. (Compare this to the blue tit who weighs just half an ounce.)

Magpies can be your friend though as they will eat harmful insects and rodents. Are there endangered small birds I should feed? Placing squirrel cones above and/or below your feeders can help stop the squirrels reaching them. Alternatively you can enclose the post of your bird table or feeder pole in smooth plastic pipe and so make it more difficult for squirrels to climb. Cats Try pairing a sturdy feeder (see RSPB Ultimate easy-clean feeders above) with a guardian. The gaps in the guardian aren’t big enough for magpies to reach through to the food in the feeder, and the sturdiness of the feeder will resist any potential damage from the end of magpies’ beaks.

If you don’t want to splash out on a shop-bought ground feeder, it’s easy enough to go for a DIY option. Very often our small garden birds are maurauded or frightened off by larger birds such as pigeons, rooks, magpies and crows. These ground feeder guardians will offer protection. The smaller birds will be able to hop through the mesh, leaving the bigger birds outside. Made from strong, powder coated metal; these ground guardians are long lasting, hard wearing and sturdy. They also feature 4 anchoring points which allows you to secure the guardian and stop it being blown away or towed away by a badger! Simplicity at its best with this compact ground feeding tray brought to you by Gardman; square shaped mesh tray for holding different types of bird food. Also, the granivorous birds, which typically feed on grains and seeds, naturally prefer to feed on the ground. And if you have your own cat, put a bell on it – undignified, I know, but at least it gives the birds a fighting chance. Unwanted Vegetation
